  • Lydian Chromatic Concept Update: revised and expanded biography on the life and music of George Russell published on October 15, 2020 now available at Amazon.

The new authorized biography on the author of "The Lydian Chromatic Concept" (LCCOTO) is entitled "Stratusphunk: The Life and Works of George Russell" written by Dr. Duncan Heining. Originally published in 2009 under the title 'George Russell: The Story of an American Composer', this 371 page new edition published by Jazz Internationale (Suffolk, UK) offers students and fans of jazz a seriously revised and extended text based on additional research and interviews.

The author Dr. Duncan Heining has written about jazz and other music genres since 1996 for Avant, The Independent, Jazzwise, Jazz UK and All About Jazz. His other books are: Trad Dads, Dirty Boppers and Free Fusioneers: British Jazz 1960-1975 (Equinox 2012) and Mosaics: The Life and Works of Graham Collier (Equinox 2018).

The new edition is available now in both Kindle and Paperback versions on Amazon AT THIS LINK.

Here's the press release description from the publisher:
"Stratusphunk is the story of remarkable musician and a remarkable man. Through his ideas and music, composer, theorist and musician George Russell joins the dots in modern jazz from bebop, though modal and free jazz and into jazz rock. It is hard to imagine another artist, who was both so influential but also so misunderstood. Throughout his life, as an African-American, George Russell confronted and overcame the many obstacles thrown in his way of racism, class inequalities and life-threatening illnesses. Widely acknowledged for his influence on the many of the developments in jazz from the fifties onwards, Russell’s impact on the music came both from his writings and teaching and from his compositions and recordings. His life and work connected with many of the most seminal figures in jazz - Miles Davis, Charlie Parker, Dizzy Gillespie, John Coltrane, Bill Evans, Carla Bley and Ornette Coleman – influencing these musicians and being influenced by them. For the first time in paperback and in a fully revised edition, Stratusphunk makes Russell’s story, music and theories available to scholars, students and fans."

This new book contains a very touching dedication to George Russell's son Jock Millgardh, Jock's wife and children (George's three grandchildren).

    Regarding Chapter Four of "Stratusphunk":

I was overjoyed to discover that this new revised and expanded text has much more detailed documentation explaining George Russell's monumental music theory treatise on tonal gravity than the 2009 biography.

As someone who was personally interviewed by Dr. Heining along with other certified teachers of "The Lydian Chromatic Concept" for his first biography, specifically in relation to my work as a member of the team of editorial assistants to Maestro Russell for 20 years on the fourth and final edition of "The Concept" and having had the honor of writing the foreword to that book, I commend Heining for allowing his readers to gain a greater understanding of what George Russell considered to be the pinnacle of his life's work. Perhaps after reading Dr. Heining's revised and expanded biography more people within and without academia will be open to exploring, studying, playing and appreciating "The Concept" in its entirety.

I give this new book my highest recommendation. It offers a comprehensive perspective to anyone who wishes to absorb an in-depth and scholarly researched chronicle of this great vertical man (my mentor of over 30 years) and the life story behind all that went into his innovative contributions to the world of music.

You can read more about this new book on the ALL ABOUT JAZZ website AT THIS LINK.

  • Music Theory

Andy Wasserman received a degree in Composition from the New England Conservatory with years of intensive study with George Russell and his renowned classic text "The Lydian Chromatic Concept of Tonal Organization."

There is no way to describe the forces that prevail inside Andy Wasserman's compositional ideas and styles without taking into consideration the profound influence that George Russell has had on him. Mr. Russell's monumental contribution to the world of music theory, and the only fully-formed, complete pan-stylistic theory of music to come from the African-American Jazz tradition is his "Lydian Chromatic Concept of Tonal Organization" (a/k/a The LCCOTO)

The Lydian Chromatic Concept of Tonal Organization is a major part of innovator, band leader, composer and Jazz master George Russell entire life's work. He spent 50 years developing this system that takes a very objective view of music, and describes in great detail what the music itself is telling us. It establishes gravity as the prime moving force in music. More detailed information about George Russell can be found HEREat his personal website, as well as the cyberspace home of "The Concept," LydianChromaticConcept.com.

Andy Wasserman specializes in teaching his students the meaning behind the music through traditional Western music theory and George Russell's Lydian Chromatic Concept of Tonal Organization (LCCOTO). He includes quite a bit of theoretical information in his instrumental lessons but is also working with a few students whose entire focus is the study of music theory.

Additionally, Andy teaches musicians how to improvise and express themselves freely and with originality on any instrument. The two disciplines of music theory and improvisation go hand in hand. Think of music theory as learning how to speak a language and improvisation as then deciding what it is that you wish to say in that new language.

A student must be an advanced beginner on their instrument and at least 9 years old in order to pursue these subjects.

Anyone can learn how to improvise within any style of contemporary music, but the art of improvisation is often best suited in the context of Jazz - American's indigenous improvisational music.

In this study the student learns to listen and build phrases that communicate a coherent, simple and clear meaningful musical statement while exploring rhythmic invention. Andy gives you the tools to build your own improvised sound with a time-tested method of teaching from the perspective of self-expression and creativity. After all, that's what improvisation is all about - and music theory gives you the map with which to navigate your journey of exploration.

These lessons can be of tremendous help to aspiring songwriters and composers in mastering their artistic and aesthetic judgment as well.
