New I-Harmonize-U video collaboration of Andy Wasserman and Chris Bandy

Vocalist and vocal arranger Chris Bandy released a new music video on June 15, 2020 collaborating with Musical Artist Andy Wasserman in the "I-Harm-U" format made famous by Jacob Collier. "I-Harm-U" is short for "I Harmonize You." The video opens with Wasserman's solo Native American Flute, followed by a spectacular original multi-track vocal arrangement of numerous overdubs composed and performed by Chris Bandy - who also completed the entire video editing production.

Andy Wasserman created a video of a solo performance using his traditional Native American Flute. This very special flute was made for him by Russ Wolf, a member of the International Native American Flute Association and co-founder of the North American Plains Flute Society. This flute is in the key of F Sharp minor. Andy is playing the main theme song from his original film-score composition entitled "Story Water" which was originally released in 2007 on his "Bead Songs" CD.

Chris Bandy then composed and arranged the vocal arrangement and proceeded to overdub all the parts (nearly 3,000 audio takes and 40 video takes!) incorporating advanced vocal techniques.

Here's what Chris wrote to Andy during production about his process:

"I definitely wanted to delve more into the high-speed vocal runs, and I felt that the embellishments of the flute really made this a good place to do it. You may have noticed that the beginning and ending are a quarter-tone below the middle section with the flute, which creates a “pitch-arc” that the flute part rises into and falls out of. In addition, I found a quick way to push the key center from F# to B while “keeping" the F# drone that you established: G#m, F#/A#, Bm, Bm/D, C#m, B/D#, E, B/F#, G, C, F#7. To me, the introduction of the C#m, combined with the downward slide, puts the end of the arrangement in a darker mood."

Here is the video as posted on Chris Bandy's YouTube channel:

Chris Bandy wrote this in the video's description:

"An I-Harm-U, melody by Andy Wasserman, harmony by Chris Bandy. This was a unique pleasure to harmonize. Almost 3,000 audio takes and 40 video takes. A huge thanks to Andy for sending in this beautiful melody, and to @Jacob Collier for the continued inspiration. I hope you enjoy!"

Upon seeing the finished project, Andy was overwhelmed with emotion and wrote this to Chris in an email message:

I'm speechless,
moved with overflowing joy,
filled to the brim with admiration for you, Chris -
in your sincere dedication to excellence and integrity
grateful beyond belief for this "surround-sound" I hear with your voice(s) within/without the flute.
This video's artistic expression is the definition of what the heart of "musiciality" is all about.
Thanks and praise to God for the talent He loans to us to make His joyful resonance,
appreciative for the opportunity to have a collaboration in this way with you
Bravo (standing ovation)
Yours in Unity,
Andy Wasserman

POST-SCRIPT ----  Andy's flute piece entitled "Story Water" was originally inspired by the following poem:

A story is like the water
you heat for your bath

It takes messages of warmth between the fire
and your skin. It lets them meet
and it cleans you!

Very few can sit down
in the middle of the fire itself.
We need intermediaries.

A feeling of fullness comes to our stomach,
but usually it takes some bread to bring it.

Beauty surrounds us,
but usually we need to be walking in a garden to know it.

The body itself is a screen
to shield and partially reveal
the Light that's blazing
inside your presence.

Water, stories, the body...
all the things we do, are mediums
that hide and yet show what's hidden

Study them,
and enjoy this being washed
with a secret
we sometimes know,
and sometimes we know not.
