GrooveScribe Software Review 2020: best-rated online music teacher by using this free, powerful, web-based rhythmic training program!
No matter which musical instrument you teach to your online music lesson students, most teachers giving online music lessons agree it can be a real challenge to find interesting and innovative ways to enhance your curriculum with the all-important subject of rhythmic training. Both you and your online music students will love meeting the challenge with the help of Groove Scribe!
Rhythmic training has always been at the forefront of what I share with my music students because the synergy of listening and timing are at the core of musicality and music making. I played drums and orchestral percussion while growing up, from Elementary school, Middle School, High School and pre-Conservatory College. That intense level of rhythmic training gave me very deep insight into understanding and teaching rhythm to my students.
With my live, interactive, personalized one-on-one private music lessons that I provide around the world online using video chat and a webcam for piano, drums, music theory, improvisation, composition for all ages and all levels, I rely on a program that you open in your browser and can use for free without any registration or log in. It is my go-to for demonstrating everything rhythmic.
It is the Groove Scribe App! - and here's the one and only link you need to use it:
Here's a page with more info on this app and mobile app options: https://www.mikeslessons.com/apps
It is the brainchild of Programmer Lou Montulli and Percussionist/Educator Mike Johnston (https://www.mikeslessons.com), designed as a free browser-based tool allowing anyone, especially drummers and drum instructor to create, practice and share grooves...and trust me, there's much, much more than what initially meets the eye on the webpage!
It’s the seamless combination of rhythmic pattern creation, rhythmic analysis, a pretty deep drum machine programming tool and rhythmic notation software all wrapped into one. Open the webpage, start entering your rhythmic pattern step-by-step, and quickly hear it and share it. Groove Scribe is a very easy program to learn and use.
LET'S CHECK IT OUT
First, here's a screenshot of the main page with the 8 identifying steps I've labeled for you to check out:
- Play button and elapsed time for playback of pattern you create
- Rhythmic notation in standard format with symbols key
- Stickings guide specifically for drum students
- Instrument and Note Selection Grid
- Add more measures if you want to make your pattern longer
- Tempo and Swing Feel sliders to adjust BPM and move from Even to Shuffle feel
- Very deep options for Permutations, Grooves (see list below) and a Help
- Metronome function
The Grooves List gives you starting patterns if you wish to have a pre-programmed drum groove to begin with. Here's the list as it appears per category in that drop-down menu:
Rock Grooves
- Empty 16th note groove
- 8th note Rock
- 16th note Rock
- Syncopated Hi-Hats #1
- Syncopated Hi-Hats #2
- Train Beat
Triplet Grooves
- Jazz Shuffle
- Half Time Shuffle in 8th notes
- Half Time Shuffle in 16th notes
- Purdie Shuffle (made famous by Bernard Purdie, Drum Legend)
- Jazz Ride
World Grooves
- Bossa Nova
- Jazz Samba
- Songo
Foot Ostinato
- Samba
- Tumbao
- Balao

There are too many "hidden" functions to list here, but when using this program, right-click on almost anything in the main window and you'll see a raft of options to vary your drum sounds along with other musical application possibilities.
I use Groove Scribe in real-time for my online lessons by sharing my Skype screen and turning on the computer audio along with my microphone. Students can see me create and edit whatever rhythmic pattern we're working on, and hear it when I press "play." Then I share the link to that page with them and they can work on it during the week.
Again, this works great for any instrument where you are trying to help students master tricky rhythmic patterns and concepts.
I can not overstate how helpful this program is. Check it out and have fun using it. It really is a joy to use, all my students love it, in fact they've all started using it on their own to create their own rhythms and drum patterns and share that work back to me to hear.
